Manage Online Reviews by Putting your Employer Brand First

Manage Online Reviews by Putting yur Employer Brand FirstManage Online Reviews by Putting your Employer Brand FirstManage Online Reviews by Putting your Employer Brand First RossheimOnline reviews of your company as an employer have become a fact of life. Employees, whether current or more likely former, can post anonymously to online review sites and job boards, including Monster. So how can you best manage online reviews? Whether you choose to craft a measured response or divert dissatisfaction to other communications channels, youll want to put your employer brandfirst.Monitor and respond on a schedule. Establish an ongoing rhythm of responding to employee reviews of your company. Have a routine for responding, says Patrick Gillooly, former director of digital communication and social media at Monster. Pick one day each week to spend time focusing on reviews. There are often lots of reviews posted on the weekend, so Monday could be a good day to respond.Put your employer brand firs t. Keep in mind that every word of each response will affect your companys image. Allow HR to have a hand in maintaining the employer brand, says Andre Lavoie, CEO of ClearCompany, which offers talent management software.Responses should express gratitude and be respectful. Take the high road by thanking employees for the time they took to write their reviews, then turn their negative online reviewsinto a constructive conversation.Accentuate positive reviews by responding to them. Talent who is seriously interested in your company will follow it on company review sites. Balance their experience of your brand by acknowledging positive reviews. Respond to as many reviews as you can, both positive and negative, says Gillooly.Standardize your voice but individualize each response. While its unwise to get personal in responding to a negative review, you should individualize it all within the profile of your employer branding.Have a template to guide your companys voice, says Gillooly. B ut from there, youll want to customize almost every response, so you dont sound like an automated response tool.Flip negative comments from former employees. Begin your response by directly addressing the point your critic makes, but move on swiftly. With former employees of our clients, we try to rise above the negativity, apologize, compliment them on something positive they did at company, and wish them luck, says Rebecca McClure, an associate with Axia Public Relations, whose ReviewMaster reputation management software monitors company review sites.Create a constructive response to criticism. Suggest a solution to your critics beef. Lets say you read a review that complains of a lack of growth opportunities, says Lavoie. Turn that into an opportunity to give examples of how your company places a value on offering professional development to A players, and encourage the reviewer to speak with an immediate supervisor about future opportunities.Turn from the critic to address every one else. Review sites, rather than taking down a negative review, usually advise companies to post a response, according to Joseph Sullivan, a partner at law firm Taylor Englishin Atlanta. An alternative in this situation is to address that response to the public rather than to the employee, Sullivan says.Sometimes silence might be the best response. Often when a comment is not responded to, people will take it with a grain of salt, says Sullivan. In a way, any response grants credence to the complaining employee. You dont want to get personal, get into a back-and-forth, or give identifying information on the person. When in doubt, seek legal review. Even in a response to a review posted anonymously, its possible for a company spokesperson to defame a current or former employee or to illegally reveal personal information about them. Thats why Sullivan suggests that responses be checked by your companys legal department or by outside counsel.

4 Simple Reasons Why You Didn#8217;t Get the Job

4 Simple Reasons Why You Didn8217t Get the Job 4 Simple Reasons Why You Didnt Get the Job Article by Natalie SevertYou submitted what you thought was a great resume but for some reason, you didnt get the job. What went wrong?Even if your resume truly was great, there are additional things that can hold back an otherwise excellent candidate. Your resume may have been trashed for one of the four reasons below1. You Didnt Tailor Your Resume to the PositionA shocking 50 percent of people dont meet the basic requirements of jobs they apply for. The majority of job seekers spend less time reading a job description than they think they do. Nearly half (44 percent) believe they spend up to five minutes reading, whereas eye-tracking technology shows they spend just about a minute or less. Its crucial to really study the job description before you start tweaking your resume. So, first things first You need to tailor your resume to the position, and the only way to do that is to thoroughly re ad the job description so you know what skills to include and expand upon.In the end, recruiters want to see the skills they asked for in the job post. When you are considering how to construct your resume, its all about integratingthose keyword skills from the job description throughout your resume. If you havent done this, it could be the main reasonwhy you didnt get the job.2. YouJob HopHow long do you typically stay with one company? If the answer is about a year, youre not alone. Most young adults in the U.S. hold an average of 7.2 jobs by the time theyre 28. Thats almost one job a year if you start at 18Furthermore, your taste for job hopping is an expensive one. In fact, it can cost a company 6-9 months worth of an employees salary to find and train a replacement. Good recruiters will avoid hiring job hoppers unless they find information that could offset the cost and risk. You have to show a hiring manager that youre worth it, thatthe value you will bring to the company is go ing to outweigh the costs youll generate. You can do that by adding quantifiable accomplishments to your resume. For example- Generated $5,000 in cost savings after negotiating a new contract with vendors.- Increased sales by 15 percent after implementing automated email campaigns.Give the impression that youll generate fantastic value for the company, even if its only for a short time.3. You Havent Had a Job in Six MonthsIf you havent had a job in six months, thats probably the reason why you didnt get the job now. Having too many jobs is a problem, buthaving too few is worse. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that there are more than 7 million unemployed Americans. Of those, 2 million are in a state of long-term unemployment, meaning theyvebeen out of work for more than a month. If you go six months without a job, it becomes almost impossible to get a new job because hiring managers wont even look at your resume. What can you do? You need to give your resume to someone who knows that youre worth it. Start by building a LinkedIn profile and leveraging your network to look for open positions and referrals.Around 40 percent of all hires come from job referrals, even though they make up only 7 percent of applications. If someone vouches for you from the inside, youre much more likely to land the job.If you dont have an inside connection, contact a hiring manager without a referral. Send a message via LinkedIn that offers something of value and provides a convincing reason to connect. Once youve made positive contact, you can send your resume directly to the hiring manager, along with a personalized email.4. Youre Overqualified for the PositionLets say you applied for a lower-ranking position because you want to have a better work/life balance. You might not have gotten the job because your resume confused the recruiters. Why would you apply for a job thats beneath you?Its best to anticipate such confusion. Tell the hiring manager that you know what youre applying for and you have your reasons. You can do this in a well-written resume summary and cover letter. On a related note,it may also be the case that you took a lower job to make ends meet. Then, when you applied for a job more in line with your career path/professional level, you didnt get it. That might be because working a job that is beneath you can make employers look warily at you.Thats not to say you shouldnt work as a barista after graduation. But if you do that, consider taking on extra work thats more in line with you career path. Volunteer work, freelancing, internships all can be good ways to gain experience in your chosen field while working a day job outside that field. Put this experience at the top of your resume to show that youve developed your primary skill set despite any setbacks you may have faced. If you didnt get a job for one of these reasons, you can always improve your resume and get the next one. It takes some forethought and effort, but its possible. Think about how you come across to recruiters, adjust your approach accordingly, and you just might land your next interview.A version of this article originally appeared on SUCCESS.com.Natalie Severt is a writer at Uptowork Your Resume Builder. The debate over whether AI helps or hurts workers continues as Forbes supercharged CMS, called Bertie, unveiled a tool that writes rough drafts of articles for contributors, reports Digiday. The tool creates a draft based on what the contributor has written about before.According to Digiday, With Bertie, a contributor who writes regularly about the automobile industry might open up the tool to find the makings of an article about Tesla, complete with links to relevant, related articles published both on Forbes and elsewhere. How to Get a Job Through a Staffing Agency

How to Get a Job Through a Staffing Agency How to Get a Job Through a Staffing Agency Some job seekers don’t want to use a staffing agency because they think these agencies only provide entry-level, temporary jobs. Others think that agencies never provide benefits to workers. None of this is true. A job seeker can use a staffing agency (also known as an employment agency or staffing company) to find a wide variety of jobs, including permanent jobs, in a number of industries. Staffing agencies hire everyone from entry-level workers to CEOs. Learn what a staffing agency is, and how to use one to find the right job for you.                                                                                                                                     How a Staffing Agency Works At a staffing agency, companies pay the agency to find employees for them. Job seekers can apply to specific jobs through the staffing agency, or can simply contact the staffing agency looking for a job. The agency interviews the job seekers and places them in appropriate positions. Typically, the agency then pays the selected candidate to work for the client company. If the company decides to hire the job seeker permanently, the staffing agency will no longer pay the job seeker. The employee will instead be paid by the company. Benefits There are many benefits to using a staffing agency to find a job. Some benefits include: It’s Free: Because the company (rather than the job seeker) is the client, you don’t have to pay to be considered for jobs at an agency. They Do the Job Searching for You: When you sign up to work with a staffing agency, they ask you about your skills and experience and let you know if they have a job that might be a good fit for you. You can also search for jobs on their internal job site. Often, they know of job openings that aren’t available on other job sites. It is a great way to get help finding job openings. There Is Variety: You can find staffing agencies that specialize in almost any industry. You can also find different types of jobs within almost any staffing agency. Jobs range from very short-term positions (as little as a couple of weeks) to permanent positions. There Are Often Benefits: Some staffing agencies provide benefits after employees have worked a certain number of days or hours. These benefits may include health insurance, a retirement plan, or even tuition reimbursement (or all three). They Give You Feedback: Most staffing agencies provide you with feedback throughout the job application process. They might give you tips on how to revise your resume or provide advice on how to successfully interview. This kind of free feedback is invaluable. Types of Available Jobs Some people think staffing agencies only fill temporary secretarial and administrative jobs, but this is not the case. You can find a job in almost every industry through a staffing agency. Some staffing agencies (including Kelly Services and Adecco) work with all kinds of companies, while others specialize in particular industries. Medical Solutions, for example, focuses on healthcare jobs. TEKsystems staffs companies with IT hires. Agencies also offer jobs that last for varying lengths of time. These include: Temporary Jobs: Companies often look for temporary hires to help during an employee’s absence or period of leave, or during a busy work period. Sometimes they hire temporary workers to complete a particular project. These temporary jobs range in length from a couple of weeks to many months.Temp-to-Hire Jobs: Also known as temp-to-perm jobs, these positions begin as temporary jobs so that the company can get to know the employee on a trial basis. Then, if the company is happy with the employee’s work, they will likely hire him or her directly. While the staffing agency will typically pay for the worker during the temporary phase, the company will then take over paying the employee when he or she becomes a full-time hire. Permanent Jobs: Some staffing agencies hire candidates for permanent positions at companies. In these situations, the agency works more like a traditional recruiter, finding, interviewing, and selecting candidates for the company. In this case, the company pays the agency a fee. If the company hires an employee, they pay for the employee. Many agencies offer a variety of all three of these kinds of jobs, although some specialize. For example, Frontline Source Group focuses on hiring temporary workers. How to Find the Right Staffing Agency for You When you are looking for a staffing agency to work with, make sure you know the kinds of industries the agency deals with, and whether they offer temporary, temp-to-hire, or permanent jobs- or all three. Check out the American Staffing Association’s online directory to find reputable staffing firms. You can search for firms in your area. You can also search by employment options (temporary, long-term, etc.) and industry. When you interview with a staffing agency, feel free to ask questions. Ask about what benefits (if any) they offer, what kinds of jobs they typically fill, the industries they work with, and the average time it takes for a job seeker to land a job. The recruiter you work with is there to help you, so don’t be afraid to gather all the information you need. Check into whether or not the agency has any services, such as workshops to help you develop skills or counselors who will help you with your resume and cover letter. If these are available, take advantage of them. Also, keep in mind that you should never have to pay a staffing agency to help you find a job. Reputable staffing agencies are paid by companies, not by job seekers. Tips for Landing a Job Treat it Like a Real Interview: The staffing agency will likely set up an interview with you to get a better sense of your skills and experience. Treat this interview exactly as you would an interview with a company. Dress appropriately and show up on time- early, if possible. Listen attentively and use positive body language to convey your attention and interest. Introduce yourself with a  firm handshake. Bring your resume and be ready to answer common interview questions. You might also be asked to complete a skills assessment to test your hard skills, so be prepared for this as well. Be Honest: Be honest about your goals, whether it’s to land a permanent position, maintain flexibility, or to develop some skills that will make you an attractive candidate for your next full-time job. Also, be honest about your availability. If you are only available on weekdays, for example, tell this to the recruiter at the staffing agency. Finally, be honest about your employment history. If you have an employment gap, for example, tell the recruiter. He or she can help you figure out how to explain this to an employer. Keep an Open Mind: Even if you want a full-time position, consider being open to temporary jobs or contract work. These can help you develop skills that might be useful when you apply for your next full-time job. If you impress an employer, he or she might try to find you a full-time position at the company.Follow Up:  Send an emailed or handwritten note  to thank the interviewers at the staffing agency for their time and to reinforce your interest in finding a position.Be Persistent and Patient:  If you applied for a job through a staffing agency and haven’t heard back, follow up within a week. Perhaps you were not right for that specific job, but a recruiter might be able to find something else that fits your skill set. Check in with any staffing firm you’ve contacted once a week to remind them of your interest and demonstrate your eagerness. Use Other Resources: You do not have to put all your eggs in one basket. While you wait to hear back from the agency, continue to job search on your own. Check out job boards and job search engines and network with people in your industry. However, be open with your recruiter- tell him or her if you apply to any jobs on your own and if you are working with a second staffing agency. This way your recruiter will not submit you for a job that you already applied for (in some cases, an employer will remove your application if he or she sees it twice). When You Get a Job, Prepare: When you receive an assignment, the agency will provide you with information as to whom to report, dress code, hours, wages, and a description of the duties and duration of the job. You might also need to do a second interview with the company. If you don’t receive all of this information, ask the agency for all of this information. You Can Say No: If you truly feel a position is not a good fit- perhaps the hours do not work for you, or the pay is well below what you need- be honest with the recruiter. Explain to him or her why you don’t want the position. It will help the recruiter find you a job that is a better fit in the future.

Child Custody Agreement Letter

Child Custody Agreement Letter Child Custody Agreement Letter Jobs in the social services sector often require that you write letters as part of your daily duties, including child custody agreement letters. You may find yourself tasked with writing a child custody agreement letter when working for a law firm. Child custody agreement letters serve as a legal way for a couple to alert the court and their attorneys to any custody arrangements they made between each other regarding any children they had together. The Importance of a Proper Child Custody Agreement Letter Roughly 40 to 50 percent of marriages in the United States end in separation or divorce, and many of the splitting couples have children. How and where the kids spend their time after the break-up can be a point of contention. A child custody agreement letter allows the couple to sit down, talk about their children, and decide on an agreement that works for both parties. As a social worker, paralegal, or attorney, you may have the chance to write a child custody agreement letter for your client. What Goes Into a Child Custody Agreement Letter? The first time you write a child custody agreement letter, you may have a difficult time determining what should go in that letter. As a copy of the child custody agreement letter will go to the court, you must use professional language and include a list of bullet points that fully explains the custody agreement. Most child custody agreement letters use the following bullet points:the name of everyone involved in the agreementthe age of any children mentioneddetails regarding who will be the custodial and noncustodial parentsa clear explanation of who the child will primarily live withany visitation arrangements the couple made regarding vacations or special eventsGenerating a Dependable Child Custody Agreement Letter Looking at child custody agreement letters is a great way to find out the format these letters follow and what the courts want to see in child custody agreement letters. Use those samples for help as you wr ite a few sample letters of your own. Theyre not responding to your resume Heres why.

Theyre not responding to your resume Heres why. Theyre not responding to your resume Heres why. You see that ad and immediately say to yourself, “I’ve done pretty much that exact job before.” So, you apply, confident. How could you NOT get a response? Every qualification practically reads like your resume. But inevitably…comes that deafening silence… If you don’t understand what’s going on, you’re not the only one. I’m going to tell you a little secret: the ATS doesn’t understand what’s going on with YOU. That’s right: the ATS (Applicant Tracking System) the scanning technology that the majority of employers now use to robo-screen resumes, doesn’t understand what’s on your resume, and therefore, is kicking you out…quickly. You must be ATS-ready. Do not underestimate the importance of this. Otherwise, your resume will end up in that great black hole that is the Internet. So, let’s go over the ATS resume strategy you need in order to increase the likelihood of actually getting a human being to respond to you. Keywords Are Critical Here’s where the very 1st problem lies: candidates tend too often to think fake, filler keywords are real keywords. I need you to back away from being, “detail-focused,” and “results-oriented,” with good communication skills. Instead, step up and embrace what it is you REALLY do that makes a difference for your next employer. If you’re in operations management, for example, perhaps what you do excellently time and again has to do with driving, “efficiency improvement,” “optimizing production,” and increasing, “SLA attainment.” Then, make sure to match those keywords with how they are expressed in the ad for the job you’re targeting. For example, if the ad calls for someone with proven performance “optimizing efficiency,” then that’s how you need to express that in the resume, instead of “efficiency improvement.” Simplicity Is Essential The ATS resume is not where you want to be a proud peacock â€" it doesn’t matter how pretty your resume is. In fact, I’ll just tell you right now: things are about to get quite ugly. All the bold, italics, colors, and every other fancy thing you have on the Word version of your resume â€" that’s got to go. Not some of it. Not all of it except…ALL of it. Your ATS resume needs to read like a text document. While it’s not the most visually appealing thing in the world, release yourself of the need for beauty, and embrace the reality that this completely non-formatted version is what will make it through the ATS scanner without being kicked back immediately. (Wrong) Formatting Is Fatal You have to keep things simple for an ATS, because it only understands simple things. Bullets are blaring. Columns are confusing. Tables are terrible. In a Word resume, you may want to position your experience inside a table. However, when you do that on an ATS resume, the ATS literally cannot see entire chunks of information you put inside that table. Right now, you have the foundation. But did you know that when you put “Highlights of Experience” on your resume, you’re still killing your chances? That’s coming up in part 2. “ATS Express!” is an all-new feature in my full online job search master class, “5 Game-Changing Job Search Hacks for the 50+ Job Hunter.” Register to see a live demonstration of an ATS transformation, so you can grab your screen shots and make sure yours is correct. And your resume may be selected for “ATS Express!”

Dumpster diving at work No one said Earth Day would be easy

Dumpster diving at work No one said Earth Day would be easy Dumpster diving at work No one said Earth Day would be easy Many of us are vaguely aware of Earth Day, celebrated annually on April 22nd, as the day that lights around the world go dim for a short while. For an increasing number of Americans, however, an awareness of “green issues” is a part of daily habit. Millennials are leading the charge. Nielsen found that environmental sustainability is an important factor in shopping for 75% of millennials and 72% of Gen Z.That reflects global trends. A 2014 Nielsen report stated that “Fifty-five percent of global online consumers across 60 countries say they are willing to pay more for products and services provided by companies that are committed to positive social and environmental impact.”What makes it into the shopping basket, of course, soon makes it into the workplace, as companies look to appeal to employees and consumers alike. We tracked down some corporations that adopted every-day green policies and encourage employees to do the same. One perfect pair of shoesTackling the notion that more isn’t always more, Jojo + Suse was founded by Joanna Raworth, who is from England, and Susan Anehagen, from Australia. They met in California and compared the differences in consumerism in the U.S. and overseas. The two focused on a time when they’d take their shoes to the cobbler to be repaired, instead of just throwing them away. A time when “handcrafted” and “long-lasting” were built into the products we all buy.  They formed a leather goods company with an idea to reduce waste and encourage people to make more conscious, thoughtful and informed decisions about the products they buy, with the ethos of buying just one gorgeous thing instead of accumulating many nice things. The best part is that their shoes are made by local artisans from around the world, contributing to sustaining their craft and livelihoods.Paid dumpster divingBootmaker Timberland has an ongoing commitment to protect the outdoors as part of their business goals. The company went a step further and hosted a week-long Earth Week event at their Stratham, New Hampshire headquarters. The goal of the initiative was rubbish. No, we’re not being mean: it really was.  Timberland  encouraged employees to reduce their individual and collective environmental footprints by examining what they throw away. The week kicked off with a voluntary “Trash Can Turn-In,” which invited employees to turn in their personal desk wastebasket for a week, which forced them to get up and walk to the nearest communal trash can to throw something out. The idea was that the effort to get up and find a garbage can would spark employees to think about what they were adding to piles of garbage.  A company rep said that “last year 20% of employees participated in this challenge, which aims to make employees more mindful of what they throw away since they will have to leave their desks to discard items.” Another event was the corporate “Dumpster Dive,” where employees were invited to don Tyvek suits and sift through trash bags destined for the landfill to determine how much of the contents is actual trash, and what could be recycled or composted. There was also their annual “Greener Living Fair,” where external vendors set up booths displaying products and services that can help employees live greener lives. These vendors include local growers of organic food,  earth-conscious cleaning products, environmental agencies, and clean energy suppliers.Greened JeansVeestro, a healthier prepared food delivery service, is looking for ways to make its packages easier on the environment. In 2015, the company switched all its plastic food trays for fully compostable paperboard trays, which received a positive response from customers.  The new frontier for Veestro: it’s in the process of testing a new eco-friendly insulation for shipping meals. The first candidate is recycled denim, which turns out to be a surprisingly good insulator.  Mark Fachler, CEO and Founder of  Veestro, told Ladders “we began using denim in November 2016 on shipments to CA, NV, AZ , UT and ID. We like the performance of the denim insulation.” Unfortunately, the denim adds a lot of weight to the package, so the company is testing alternatives as well. Fachler said, “we began testing insulation made with recycled water bottles a couple of weeks ago. We still have a few more tests to perform, but it is lighter than denim. He plans an expansion: “If we are happy with the results, we plant to first replace denim on the states mentioned above and then roll in the rest of the country sometime in Q2, once we open our distribution facility in East Coast. Additionally, Veestro is working to make all our packaging fully recyclable and compostable.”These three companies are just an example of how customers and employees are asking companies to be more green, and it looks like a trend that will go on long past the few hours a year that people are focused on Earth Day.

Special Ops Weather Teams

Special Ops Weather Teams Special Ops Weather Teams HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. Slashing through Burmese jungles with Maj. Gen. Orde Wingate’s Chindits; hunkering down far above the DMZ in North Vietnam; infiltrating into Northern Iraq to ensure the success of a thousand-man airborne jump not the average day at the office for most weather forecasters. But those missions and many more have been business as usual since 1942 for the Air Force special operations weather teams assigned of the 10th Combat Weather Squadron here. The battle-trained meteorologists of special operations weather have been at the tip of the spear for more than 60 years. They have deploying with other special operators from every branch of the armed forces. They provide combatant commanders with the weather data and analysis they need to plan and execute missions at the tactical, operational and strategic levels of war. Elite members of the Air Force Special Warfare program, special operations weathermen receive specialized training far beyond that of other meteorologists, squadron director of operations Maj. Don Shannon said. “Our guys have first gone through the normal weather training and served in an operational weather squadron before they can volunteer for SOWT,” he said. Major Shannon said, “We typically work with special operations forces from the U.S. Army Special Operations Command, but because of the unique capability we provide, we also work with special operations teams from the other services. Because of the types of individuals we team with, we undergo much of the specialized training they do so we can keep up with them in the field.” Weather team members are jump-qualified and may hold ratings as military freefall parachutists, air assault specialists, Rangers, combat diver qualifications and more, the major said. Some team members have received specialized training in military snow skiing, snowshoeing and avalanche forecasting to better align with their SOF counterparts’ mission, he said. “We know that when we put out a forecast, someone is going to use it downrange,” said Capt. Don Garrett, the squadron’s assistant director of operations. “We provide the real-time, eyes-on, ground truth about conditions that can critically impact the mission. “That’s why this is a total volunteer outfit,” he said. “We’re all willing to give it one hundred percent every day.” Major Shannon agrees the people are what make the weather teams unique. “These people have great attitudes. They’re tough guys who get it done no matter how rough it gets,” he said. “There aren’t a lot of us, so we all know each other and know how to work as a team.” In fact, there are very few SOWT operators in the Department of Defense. They are currently listed on the Global Military Force Policy low-density, high-demand asset list. There are roughly 100 SOWT operators in the Air Force, including 20 to 25 officers, Major Shannon said. Most are with the Hurlburt squadron. But others serve with AFSOC special tactics units in the United States and overseas, he said. Not only do the low numbers of billets make if difficult to enter into the SOWT field, the fitness standards and selection program is equally as challenging. In fact, the SOWT candidates have to ace the PAST that is the same events as the Air Force PJ and CCT:  2 x 25m underwater swim, a 500m swim, pushups, situps, pullups, and 1.5 mile timed run. They will also be required to ruck (carrying 50 pound backpacks) for timed events as well.   Air Force Physical Ability and Stamina Test (PAST)   SOWT 2 x 25m u/w swim Pass/fail 500m swim 11:42 1.5 mile run 10:10 Pullups 2 min 8 Situps 2 min 48 Pushups 2 min 48 NOTE: The PAST requirements are designed to test for a minimum fitness level for entry into the various training pipelines. Candidates should continue to train throughout their application process to exceed these minimums in order to enhance their chances of success as it is a highly competitive program. Dave Mack. He infiltrated into Iraq with an Army special forces operational detachment alpha team during the early stages of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Tasked with collecting weather data, the team endured sandstorms that buried them in their sleeping bags. They survived 12 missile attacks, one which destroyed their humvee, and endured almost continuous small-arms attack. Public Expectations of Police Officers

Public Expectations of Police Officers Public Expectations of Police Officers Freddie Gray. Eric Garner. Michael Brown. Walter Scott. These are but a few of the many names made famous through the tragic use of force by police. And yes, regardless of where one may stand on the merits of each individual case, we can rightly call each and every instance of law enforcement-related deaths tragic. They’re tragic because no child grows up expecting â€" and certainly not wanting â€" to lose his life at the hands of the police. And they’re tragic because no truly dedicated police officer â€" no matter how stringent, strict, or rigid â€" goes to work on any given day hoping to take someone’s life. Does the Public Support the Police? If Youtube, social media and news outlets are to be believed, the members of the public in the United States are losing trust and confidence in law enforcement across the country. Though it may be of little solace, this is not the first time faith in the police forces have waned, and it likely won’t be the last. The late 1960s and ‘70s saw a very vocal outcry against seemingly heavy-handed tactics by police, only to see that respect return through much of the 1980s. It fell away again after Rodney King’s beating in Los Angeles in the early ‘90s. Once again, though, that respect and faith returned, and immediately after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks law enforcement at all levels received near-unprecedented support. For all the talk about public distrust of police, a 2011-2014 Gallup poll revealed that overall, 56 percent of the American public still hold police in high regard, receiving the third-highest indication of confidence in an institution behind the U.S. military and small business. Nonetheless, it is safe to say that something of a disconnect exists between police and their communities in some regards. What Does the Public Expect from Police Officers? So what, then, can our profession â€" and the criminal justice industry â€" learn from the rise, fall, and rise again of support for policing in our communities? From anger over recent police shootings and past transgressions by officers, we can know that our public expects us to use the minimum force necessary to bring an event to a peaceful conclusion and that, in the event that a police officer must use force, especially deadly force, it should be clearly and unambiguously necessary to do so. Policing is a Dangerous Job Police, of course, understand that nearly every encounter with civilians is fluid, dynamic, and potentially wrought with danger. Though it’s quite true that the vast majority of people a police officer may encounter in any given day on the job will pose no threat and offer nothing but compliance, that officer can never know when or if they’re dealing with that one individual who is determined to do her harm. No Matter How Well-Intentioned, Police Can Be Their Own Worst Enemy The public and the pundits, too, know this, at least in the abstract. However, whereas once a police officer’s word was almost all that was needed to determine his use of force was justified, the proliferation of video recording â€" beginning with Rodney King and only growing from there â€" police must come to terms with the fact that the picture presented in those videos has not always matched the final report. And while it would be foolish and irresponsible to suggest coverups were once functions of the standard operating procedures of the day, it’s also easy to see why and how some elements of the public may have formed that view. Why Police and the Public Aren’t Always on the Same Page All of this talk, then, begs the question: where is the disconnect? Officers understand the incredible responsibility they have to protect and serve, and the overwhelming majority of them are wonderful people who have chosen the profession of law enforcement because they wanted to do the right thing for the right reasons. The issue may be found in how so many police recruits are trained combined with the unfortunate but near-inevitable fact that once-idealistic and enthusiastic officers can become so jaded and disaffected after years of interacting so intimately with crime and human tragedy. Because police officers are very likely to encounter dangerous individuals as a necessary part of the job, they are appropriately taught from day one â€" and this is reinforced their entire careers â€" that their number one goal is to make it home at the end of their shifts. This sort of training and culture correctly imparts the importance of officer safety to new police, but it leaves out a critical component, and that is the hierarchy of responsibility officers bare for the safety of everyone. When responding to or investigating any situation, responders are concerned with the safety of the victims, witnesses, and innocent bystanders first, their own safety second, and finally the subject, suspect or violator third. But they must be concerned with the suspects safety nonetheless. The Real Goal of Law Enforcement Every officer should be focused on getting home safely at the end of her shift. But as Sir Robert Peel first expressed in his principles of policing, the real goal of law enforcement is to obtain voluntary compliance with the law. Officers can apply this concept in their day-to-day interactions by making it their goal to make sure everyone  in the police encounter gets home (or jail, mental health facility or other appropriate venue as necessary) at the end of the interaction. How then, can officers accomplish this goal and ensure their safety? First off, understand that there is no 100 percent solution. No matter what, there are - and will continue to be - people who will force officers to use force, up to and including deadly force, regardless of what the officer does. In those cases, for the sake of the public and the police, officers must not hesitate to act to counter any threat as quickly and efficiently as possible. However, too many officers forget their training and find themselves in positions where force quickly becomes their only option. This can be said of many, if not all, of the  recent  cases of so-called police  violence that has been the source of such outrage. No matter what police academy an officer attends, she will most certainly be taught basic principles of officer safety, specifically for the purposes of keeping herself in a position of physical and psychological advantage to immediately defeat even so much as a thought of defiance through the use of distance, cover, command presence and professional behavior. The idea here is not to avoid force, but, as much as possible, eliminate the need for it to begin with. Time For Police to Get Back to the Basics The simple fact is that the public is demanding a change in how police do business. The good news is, this doesn’t necessitate a major change in culture or even training. Rather, it means a change in emphasis. Officers and departments alike already emphasize tactics over tempers. That, coupled with an emphasis on officers reverting to their original training as opposed to the learned habits and behaviors they’ve acquired, can demonstrate the true dedication of the police to public. This, in turn, can help usher in a new era of public support for law enforcement.

The dark side of meditation study finds 25% have had an unpleasant experience

The dark side of meditation study finds 25% have had an unpleasant experience The dark side of meditation study finds 25% have had an unpleasant experience Meditation may not be the “ohm” experience it’s often described as. Twenty-five percent of practitioners who meditate regularly report having had a “particularly unpleasant” psychological experience, including fear, anxiety, and distorted emotions, according to  a new study published in the journal PLOS One.The likelihood of having a bad experience depended on if you were a man or a woman, if you were religious or non-religious, and what kind of meditation you practiced.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! The findings 25.6% reported they had encountered a “particularly unpleasant meditation-related experience. More male participants (28.5%) reported a particularly unpleasant experience, compared to 23% of female participants. 30.6% of those who did not have a religious belief had a particularly unpleasant experience, compared to 22% of those who did. More people, 29.2%, who practiced only deconstructive types of meditation (such as Vipassana and Koan practice used in Zen Buddhism) reported a particularly unpleasant experience, compared to 20.3% to practice other types of meditation. And meditation retreats seem to be shaky ground: 29% of those who had been on one at any point in life had a particularly unpleasant experience, compared with 19.6% who had never been on a retreat. The research is, however, limited. Led by the University College London, researchers asked 1232 online survey participants who had at least two months of regular meditation practice just one question: “Have you ever had any unpleasant experiences (e.g. anxiety, fear, distorted emotions or thoughts, altered sense of self or the world), which you think may have been caused by your meditation practice?”The study did also not account for pre-existing mental-health problems.Still, the findings are striking and show that more research on meditation’s downsides is needed.“These findings point to the importance of widening the public and scientific understanding of meditation beyond that of a health-promoting technique,” said psychiatrist and lead author Marco Schlosser, in a statement. “Very little is known about why, when and how such meditation-related difficulties can occur: more research is now needed to understand the nature of these experiences.”“When are unpleasant ex periences important elements of meditative development, and when are they merely negative effects to be avoided? This study isn’t the first to document the negative effects of meditation; Brown University has also delved into the subject. There’s anecdotal evidence of meditation’s negative effect in the news, as well. Two years ago, a woman emerged from a ten-day meditation retreat and jumped in front of a train, committing suicide. A yoga teacher who had an experience with psychosis after a meditation retreat even launched the website Meditation in Safety. So while meditation isn’t something to be scared of, going deeply into your mind can have unexpected repercussions. If anything, the downsides of meditations, like the upsides, show just how powerful a tool it is.You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people
